The emperor’s new clothes
"These must, indeed, be splendid clothes!" thought the Emperor. "Had I such a suit, I might at once find out what men in my realms are unfit for their office, and also be able to distinguish the wise from the foolish! This stuff must be woven for me immediately." And he caused large sums of money to be given to both the weavers in order that they might begin their work directly.
So the two pretended weavers set up two looms, and affected to work very busily, though in reality they did nothing at all. They asked for the most delicate silk and the purest gold thread; put both into their own knapsacks; and then continued their pretended work at the empty looms until late at night.

創(chuàng)作背景
《皇帝的新裝》原本是從中世紀(jì)西班牙民間故事移植而來。西班牙作家塞萬提斯也曾在其戲劇中運(yùn)用過這個素材。故事的結(jié)局是那個國王光著身子在朝臣和全城百姓面前走過，大家都噤若寒蟬、不吭一聲。安徒生改寫時，在結(jié)尾處讓一個孩子喊出了“他沒有穿衣服”這句真話。[2]
這篇故事寫于1837年，和同年寫的另一起童話《海的女兒》合成一本小集子出版。
作者簡介
漢斯·克里斯蒂安·安徒生（1805－1875年），是一個將民間傳說、道德說教和幽默詼諧與他自己的非凡想象力結(jié)合起來的丹麥作家，他創(chuàng)作的童話故事不僅對兒童而且對成年人同樣具有重要意義。他出生在Odense城的貧民窟。他的父親是一名鞋匠，但受過良好的教育。
